Scrap Vintage : Memories

I must confess I find it hard to use vintage items and ephemera in my creating, not because I cant, it is more a case of not wanting to ruin some thing that is pretty amazing in its own right! So I could be accused of being a hoarder of all things vintage, and old! ....that includes all the wonderful items that Jenni finds and includes in the amazing Antiquarian Kits! 

So I have [grudgingly ....joke :)] used mostly vintage and found items from past Jenni Bowlin Studio Antiquarian kits, with the odd fabulous new release embellishment and quite possible you might spy an embellishment from an older range :) :) :)

For this particular layout I have used a vintage photo [credit The Whatevers] and used a fun mix of both vintage findings and old and new release embellishments. the black ground splash of green was made using the delicious paint Seed Packet.

Again I have used a vintage photo [credit The Whatevers], but kept it light and fresh with using the fabulous Die-cut Bank Statement paper as a background and a fresh color palette; the paint is the divine Chili Powder.

This final layout is created using a contemporary photo and a play on words from the actual book page background. I thought it was a fabulous contrast with using the title 'A little field, I'd like to have a little field', with a photo representing me living in the 'concrete jungle'. The picture of a little cottage under a tree completes the contrast perfectly.

Sooooo as you can see I have well and truly overcome my fear of using wonderful vintage items and ephemera in my creativity, I do hope you have as much fun as I did! :)

Louise Nelson has created more magic with her Jenni Bowlin Studio stamps and paints.  I asked her about her technique for creating this page - see her answers below!

Here's what Louise had to say about her technique:

Q: Did you adhere the book pages onto the background with gesso? 

Louise: no I usually use a glue stick which is what I did for this layout, but I have subsequently used gel medium which I prefer :) 

Q: Do you water down your gesso? 

Louise: for this layout I did to have a white wash effect :)

Q: What is the layout built on - chipboard? 

Louise: yes it is on the same backing I used in the video :)

Q: Is the butterfly stamped with ink? 

Louise: yes it is

Q: ... and then painted inside with Chicken Feed paint? - was it watered down a bit? 

Louise: yes it was and yes it was watered down :)

Perfecting the Splat! With Louise Nelson

Mixed Media and artsy techniques are all the rage now.  Scrappers and crafters are trying new things and sharing techniques, tutorials, and how-to's in this new genre.  Have you been asked how to create splats and splatters on a page?  One would think that creating a splat would be as easy as creating a mess!  But getting a splat that looks random, yet so perfect at the same time is difficult! It's one of the most common questions posed on message boards these days.

Enter Louise Nelson!  Louise is a wonderful Australian scrapbooker and created this tutorial for Jenni Bowlin Studio on creating that perfect splat with quite an interesting technique!  She also covers her chipboard buttons with splattered paint and will show how she does that too!

Journal What's Inspiring You

Like everyone, I'm constantly in search of what inspires me to continue to to strive to be a better person, a better wife and mom, and maybe a better "artist"... My husband and I took the time to watch the film Gandhi this past weekend, and just like we had heard - it's a life changer. You can't see that, really take it in, and not be changed. I now have two books about the man and his teachings in my queue for reading.

For my layout, I loved layering a bunch of the media {all of jenni's yummy paints and inks} together to create the background for my title - then using the stencil paper to add texture medium for the main bit of it.

I also highlighted the texture in the butterflies by brushing over it with the speckled eggs ink pad.

Bluebird of Spring: Crafty Tutorial

With March approaching, most people's thoughts in the United States turn to spring. Wouldn't it be fun to chase away a friend's winter blues with these sweet spring wishes?

Supplies that you'll need:

• Jenni Bowlin Bird Chipboard
• Jenni Bowlin Chipboard Flowers
• Jenni Bowlin Tart Tins
• Vellum Butterflies in Yellow
• Pearl and Rhinestone Charms in Cream
• Jenni Bowlin/Ranger paints in Stick Candy, Malted Milk, and Soap Powder
• Jenni Bowlin/Ranger inks in Stick Candy, Malted Milk, Speckled Egg, and Brown Sugar
• Ink Blending Tool
• Ranger Crackle Accents
• Crackle medium for paints
• Ribbon 
• small stick to attach your butterfly to
• small piece of floral foam, floral moss, and spanish moss - all available in the floral aisle of your craft store
• small twig to attach to the base {optional}
• heat gun, hot glue gun and glue sticks

For the bird, you'll need the Malted Milk paint, crackle medium and Soap Powder paint:

Give the small chipboard bird a coat of the Malted Milk paint and allow it to dry thoroughly. Feel free to use your heat gun, but keep it as a distance. The heat can sometimes bubble the paint as it dries:

Apply a nice coat of the crackle medium and let it dry. The less you push the medium around when you're spreading it on, the better crackles you'll get on your finished piece. Allow it to dry. If it's wet at all when you apply the overcoat, it won't crackle.

Spread a nice, thick coat of paint on top of the dry crackle. Make sure you have plenty of paint on your brush and spread evenly - you can't go back over your work much, because the crackle medium can cause the paint to clump.

Watch it crackle as it dries. I don't like using a heat gun to dry this, unless I keep the gun well away from the piece, so that the paint won't bubble.

Distress your chipboard bird by dabbing your finger in Malted Milk ink, and swiping it across the bird in the same direction as the crackles.

Finish the edges with the same method, using the Brown Sugar in.

Attach the wing using a hot glue gun, and add a rhinestone for the eye. then set it aside to create the base, and "nest" for your bird.

Apply Stick Candy paint to the small chipboard flower from the package. Once it dries, apply a coat of Crackle Accent. Set it aside to dry.

Apply a coat of malted milk paint to the tart tin and allow it to dry.

Distress the tin using the same method as the bird, using the Malted Milk, Brown Sugar and Speckled Egg inks. Just gently press your finger in the ink pad and brush across the tin. You can wipe excess off using a paper towel if you need to! Allow the ink to dry.

Glue a small piece of the floral foam to the bottom of the tin, using the hot glue gun.

Hide the foam by gluing a piece of the Spanish moss to cover. Cut off any flyaway pieces.

Press bird into the foam and add hot glue to hold.

Once the crackle on the flower for the base is dry, distress it first with the Stick Candy ink, and then with Brown Sugar ink.

Add some floral moss on top and glue.

To make the banner piece, curl the paper around the edges.

Distress with Brown Sugar ink and the ink blending tool.

Glue the tart tin to the base, and add the stick on the side. Embellish your bird by adding the tag, bow, pearls, and mounting the butterfly on the stick behind the bird. 

All finished and ready to give to a friend or enjoy yourself!
